This study investigated Salmonella prevalence in the environment and products of MCL and backyard farms. This included evaluation of pre- and postharvest levels. The evaluation included comparison with conventional farming systems including the contamination in farm level and post-harvest products available in retail stores. We also determined the serovar prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Salmonella serovars associated with MCL and backyard farms and conventional farms.

A total of 787 samples from 11 farms (four conventional poultry farms and seven organic MCL farms) were collected between June 2012 and August 2014 in Maryland and the DC metropolitan area. Farms sampled were selected based on the willingness of the farm managers to participate in the study. These farms were located in four different counties in Maryland. A total of 357 and 430 samples were collected from conventional poultry farms and MCL farms respectively.
