The current study aimed at filling these gaps by examining the use of disinfectants in poultry and pig husbandry and its contribution to the antibiotic and disinfectant susceptibility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates.
Belgian broiler and pig farms were randomly selected from the Belgian Identification and Registration (I&R) database by generating a list of random numbers via Excel which were linked to the farm list. The only selection criterion for broiler farms was that the flock contained at least 10, 000 animals to be representative for the average practice situation.
