In this study, 311 chicken faecal samples were randomly collected from December 2008 to June 2009 from three different poultry farms and three abattoirs into sterile containers and transported within two hours on ice to the laboratory. The selection was a representation of the two types of poultry production in South Australia: intensive meat chickens (free range and indoor commercial) and free range egg layers. In addition, Campylobacter isolates were randomly selected from a prevalence study carried out on different piggeries (39 piggeries and 10 piggery environmental samples) in 1998 and 2003/2004 (Barton and Peng 2005) with some poultry isolates from 2000 (Barton and Wilkins 2001) and 2007–2008 (Unpublished poultry study from the University of South Australia).
