Thirty-six day-old broiler chickens (Cobb strain, Chorley Chicks Ltd., Chorley, Lancs., England) were randomly allocated in groups of 12 to one of three identical pens and individually marked with numbered wing tags. The pen floor was covered with wood shavings; feed and water were offered ad libitum. For the first two weeks of life all chickens were given the basal diet without added zinc bacitracin. Then at 15 days of age and until the end of the trial 45 days later, Group A chickens were given feed with no added zinc bacitracin; Group B chickens received 20ppm zinc bacitracin in the feed and Group C chickens received 100ppm zinc bacitracin in the feed. The duration of medication was 45 days.
Faeces samples were collected in small sterile self-fastening plastic sachets from the cloaca of individual birds on four occasions at 14 day intervals. One half of all faecal samples from each group were pooled into three pools for bacterial enumeration.
