Walton, John R. (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
Zoonoses and Public Health (2010)
Twenty 5-weeks-old pigs from three different litters from the same farm, reared on non-antibiotic-containing food, were mixed and randomly divided into four groups of five. On admission, the pigs were allowed five days for acclimatisation to the new environment. During the next eight days strains of faecal E. coli were obtained daily from each pig for the determination of baseline antibiotic resistance levels and for perfection of laboratory techniques. After the eighth day three groups were given, respectively, 10 and 100 ppm. nitrovin and 100 ppm. furazolidone continuously in their food for 24 days. The fourth group was left untreated for control purposes.
All 20 pigs were sampled daily for 32 days by means of faeces swabs obtained one hour after the morning feed. 25 strains of fecal E. coli were obtained and purified per pig, per day, for 32 days.
