Zoonoses and Public Health (2010)
Twenty one-week-old Friesian and Friesian-Hereford cross calves from 10 different farms, reared on feed free from antibiotic, were mixed and randomly divided into four groups of five. On admission, the calves were allowed 10 days acclimatisation to their surroundings and feed. During the next eight days daily faeces samples were removed from the rectum to determine baseline antibiotic resistance data for the faecal E. coli. Following the 10-day acclimatisation period three groups of calves were given in their diet respectively, 10 and 100 ppm. nitrovin and 100 ppm. furazolidone continuously for 32 days. The remaining group of calves were left untreated as controls. Apart from sulphamezathine administered to calf number 286 for the treatment of necrotic stomatitis, no other calf received any antibiotic other than that included in the diet specifically for the purpose of the experiment.
All calves were sampled daily for 40 days, faeces samples being removed from the rectum one hour after the morning feed. 25 strains of faecal E. coli were obtained from each calf daily for 40 days.
