Chickens were purchased as day-olds from a commercial hatchery and reared in three groups (A, B and C) of 12 birds.Throughout the experimental period Group A was given feed containing no ampicillin while the feed of Groups B and C contained 1.7 and 5 g t-' respectively.

Three birds were killed humanely on days 3, 7, 10 and 14 after purchase and a sample of their caecal contents obtained aseptically. The samples were pooled prior to culture.
