A total of 787 samples from 11 farms (four conventional poultry farms and seven organic MCL - mixed-crop-livestock farms) were collected between June 2012 and August 2014. Farms sampled were selected based on the willingness of the farm managers to participate in the study. A total of 357 and 430 samples were collected from conventional poultry farms and MCL farms respectively. Organic MCL farms in this study raised chickens free from antimicrobials and allowed poultry access to outside environment. Samples analysed in this study included feces, eggs, feed, water and environment. The post-harvest contamination levels of Salmonella on produce and chicken meat samples in organic and conventional retail supermarkets, as well as farmers markets involved the investigation on a total of 1377 post-harvest samples. These samples included seven farmers markets (n=478), three organic retail supermarkets (n=369) and three conventional retail supermarkets (n=530) Isolates with intermediate resistance were classified as susceptible, since these isolates are able to be clinically treated with a higher than normal dosage of the drug.

To determine the post-harvest level contamination in chicken meat samples, whole chickens were collected and approximately five samples were prepared from per pound of chicken meat.
