Thirty newly-weaned pigs aged between 3 and 4 weeks were chosen. They were divided into two identical groups of fifteen, according to weight, sex and litter origin. There were eight males and seven females in each group. The two groups were placed in totally- separated insulated box-type pens. Basal feed con- taining no antimicrobial agents or growth promoters o'ther than copper at 180 p.p.m. Halquinol was added to a tonne of the feed to provide a level of 120 g/tonne finished feed. Five days before the start of medicated feeding to the halquinol group, both groups were placed on the basal ration. After the 42-day period the pigs were placed on the standard medicated grower ration used on the farm, which contained 66 p.p.m. of both chlortetracycline hydrochloride and sulpha- dimidine, and 32.8 p.p,m. procaine penicillin.

All pigs were sampled by rectal swabs. Thereafter, sampling was carried out in exactly the same manner at weekly intervals, five in all over the 42-day period. At the end of that time both groups of pigs were placed on a medicated ration (see above) and were resampled 17 days later.
