12 swine populations. Swine populations consisted of 5 farrow-to-finish and 7grower-to-finisher operations. One farrow-to-finish multi-plier unit occasionally purchased (every6 months) boarsand gilts for breeding purposes. Pigs in the study system moved through the system asfollows: farrowing barns, hot nursery, cold nursery, grower, finisher barns, lairaged overnight in a holdingpen, and last sent to be slaughtered. Pork products wereprocessed at the in-system slaughter plant. Antibiotic use data (i.e., antibiotic records) were notapplicable to the pigs in the holding pens; therefore, onlythe first 6 swine production groups were included in theanalysis. Antibiotics were distributed to the swine populationsas both medicated feed (i.e., feed supplemented withantibiotics) and directly administered to individual swinethrough parenteral routes (i.e., injectable antibiotics). Antibiotic use (g/host kg-month) info found in Table 2

For swine, monthlycomposite fresh fecal floor samples (50 g) and barn-wash/pre-lagoon influent samples (50 ml) were collectedfrom pen floors at each of the 12 swine farms and at theslaughter-plant holding pens for a period of 36 months(January 2004–December 2006).
