Animals were obtained from four farms located near Guelph, ON. Piglets were transferred to experimental quarters between the 5th and 7th weeks of age. In all instances, creep feeds containing 100 g of chlortetracycline, 100 g of sulphamethazine and 50 g of penicillin per ton were made available to piglets while on farms of origin. Single litter of pigs used for an individual experiment. Chlortetracycline in the form of Aurofac 10^1 was added to the ration of the test group of animals while the control group received unsupplemented ration from the same milling. Feed additive was supplied to provide a final concentration of chlortetracycline of 10 g per ton to test animals from Farms A, B, and C and 20 g per ton to those from Farm D. Feed was supplied ad libitum in self feeders.
Rectal swab samples were collected from all pigs at each sampling. The first set of samples were obtained within 2 days of admission to experimental quarters and prior to the administration of any chlortetracycline. Additional sets of samples were collected at 3 - 4 day intervals, until termination of each experiment.
