This study used antimicrobial treatment and antimicrobial resistance data from 34farrow-to-finish farms located in Ontario, Canada. To address the study objectives, fourgroups of study farms were needed: farms on which no antimicrobials were added topost-weaning rations; farms on which antimicrobials were added only to weanling pigrations; farms on which antimicrobials were added to weanling pig rations, andantimicrobials with Gram-positive, narrow-spectrum activity including tylosin, salino-.mycin and bacitracin were added to grower–finisher rations; and farms on whichantimicrobials were added to weanling pig rations, and tetracycline was added togrower–finisher rations. Antimicrobial use in feed, water, and by injection weremeasured on all farms for 2 months and patterns of use and rates of treatment are.described in Dunlop et al. 1998a . Twenty fecal samples from finisher hogs within 1month of slaughter were collected on two occasions 1 month apart from each of the 34study farms.
