Two programmes of sampling were undertaken. Forthefirst, 89 poultry meat farms were included in across-sectional survey of FQrE. coliandCampylobacterspp. 68 broiler and 21 turkeyfarms were each sampled once between June 2001and June 2003, with 64 separate freshfloor droppingsbeing collected from random locations in up to fourhouses and combined into eight pools of eight sampleseach. Sampling on poultry company premises was per-formed either by company-appointed poultry veteri-narians or by poultry company staff under thesupervision of the company veterinarian. Independentpoultry producers (20 farms) carried out the samplingthemselves. data abouthusbandry practices, performance, disease and druguse, including use of non-FQ antibiotics, were collectedusing detailed questionnairesfilled in by the farm man-ager with the veterinarian doing the sampling, or by independent producers themselves. The second (follow-up) programme investigatedthe potential for dissemination and persistence ofFQr organisms by carrying out farm-level samplingat representative stages of breeding and productionnetworks in two integrated companies.
