On pasture poultry farms, No antimicrobials were used. The pens had a roof (oftena piece of tin or plastic tarp), open-air wiring for walls, and no flooring, giving the broilers direct access to the pasture. The pens were moveda minimum of once a day to a new area of pasture, which usually hadnot had broilers on it in over a year. Pens had from 25 to 100 broilersinside, and the broilers were slaughtered at 55-100 days old. On conventionalpoultry farms, the broilers were reared intensively in a large house withan all-in-all-out system. Houses had from 15,000 to 75,000 broilers inside, and thebroilers were slaughtered at 40-55 days old. Feed-grade antimicrobialswere routinely used on the conventional poultry farms. During the summer of 2004, eight pasture andnine conventional broiler poultry farms were sampled in Wisconsin.During the summer of 2005, 10 pasture and five conventional broilerpoultry farms were sampled in the southeastern states (three pasturefarms from Virginia, one from South Carolina, and the remaining 11farms from North Carolina).

From eachfarm, 30 (;5-g) fecal specimens were collected from the pasture poultryand conventional poultry farms. Thespecimens were collected within a week before slaughter to approximateSalmonellaprevalence near slaughter. For pasture broilers in Wisconsin, the average slaughter age was 61 days (range 45-90 days); in theSoutheast, it was 56 days (range 42-83 days). For all pasture poultrybroilers tested, the average market age was 59 days. For conventionalbroilers in Wisconsin, the average market age was 34 days (range 31-37days); in the Southeast, the average market age was 56 days (range 53-58days), and for all conventional broilers tested, the average marketage was 43 days.
