Our objective was to identify possible non-antimicrobial risk factors for the prevalence of antimicrobial resistant C. coli on pig-finishing farms. Minimum herd size was 60 finishing pig spaces for farms with an all-in-all-out system and 100 finishing pig spaces for farms with a continuous-flow system. 64 farms were included in our risk-factor analyses, because extensive information on health status, husbandry system, and farm management were available from these farms. Data on farm management and housing system were collected on-farm by structured interview. The questionnaire consisted of closed questions only, was administered by the study veterinarian, and took approximately 15 min for completion.

Each finishing farm was visited once between May and November 2001, and 20 faecal samples were collected from the floor of pens holding finishing pigs shortly before slaughter. If possible, individual fresh faecal pats were identified within each pen. Faecal samples were collected evenly distributed from all areas with faeces. For laboratory analyses, four groups of five faecal samples each were pooled.
