Veterinary Record (2003)
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 41 traditional and 47 animal-friendly farms in Switzerland from May to November 2001. Traditional farms were complete confinement operations, with completely or partially slatted floor pens. Animal-friendly systems had pens with several separate areas, straw bedding, and an outdoor yard with a concrete floor to allow the pigs to exercise. For bacterial culture, five samples were combined to make one pooled sample. One strain from each Campvlobacter-positive pooled sample was taken for susceptibility testing.
On each farm, 20 faecal samples were collected from the floor of pens containing market-weight finishing pigs.
