132 weaned pigs with no previous exposure to antibiotics. One of six feed treatments was applied to each group:(i) a basal diet without additives, (ii) a similar diet with 6 kg/ton egg yolk powder from chickens challenged with Salmonella antigens (ASEY), (iii) same diet with 6 kg/ton commercial food grade egg yolk powder derived from chickens not challenged with Salmonella antigens (EY), (iv) same diet with 150 g/ton apra-mycin for 14 days followed by 25 g/ton carbadox (APRCB),(v) same diet with 100 g/ton oxytetracycline (TET), or (vi) same diet with spray dried plasma protein (SDPP) included at 3% of the diet. ASalmonellaTyphimurium strain originallyobtained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal DiseaseControl Center (Ames, IA)(7, 19)and induced to nalidixic acidresistance was used as a challenge organism.

Fecal swabs from rectum before treatment application (day 0 of the experiment), just before challenge with Salmonella(day 7), and on days 8, 12, 14, 21, 28, 58, 88, and118 for the isolation of Salmonella and E. coli.
