A number of litters of Large White piglets, reared on a farm where anti- biotics were rarely used, were repeatedly sampled. On the basis of the results of these observations two pigs were selected for study. These pigs were sow-reared until 42 d of life; after weaning they were kept on the farm for a further 27 d and then moved to the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Langford, where they were separately housed in different buildings. Both animals were raised similarly but every effort was made to avoid cross-infection between them; different attendants fed and sampled each pig. Throughout the 69 d at the farm of birth the pigs received no antibiotics either in therapy or as growth promoters, although the dam of the treated pig was given a 3 d course of injections of combined streptomycin and penicillin concluding one day prior to parturition. Throughout their stay at Langford the feed for both pigs included 20 g/ton virginiamycin and 700 g/ton CuSO, but no therapeutic antibiotics. To determine the influence of antibiotics on the gut flora, the treated pig received two series of oral therapeutic doses of tetracycline. This was administered on days 105-107 and days 175-177.
Faecal samples were taken from the rectum of each pig into polythene sleeves (Linton et al. 1975) at irregular intervals throughout life, twice at the farm of birth and on 19 occasions at Langford
