Test effects of antibiotic treatment regiments on gut microflora of a batch of twenty 30-day-old piglets (weaned at the same time and supposed to have never been treated with antibiotic previously). The faecal samples were then collected again after a 10 days-period during which antibiotic was completely absent. Piglets randomly divided into 5 groups, with 4 animals in each group. Group 1 was the control group which was treated with saline only. Group 2 was the sub-therapeutic group in which the piglets were subjected to parenteral administration of a sub-therapeutic dosage of ceftiofur (Naxcel) at 0.5 mg/kg BW (body weight) parenterally once daily during a three days’ treatment period. Group 3 was treated parenterally with a therapeutic dosage of ceftiofur (Naxcel) at 5 mg/kg BW (body weight) once a day for 3 days by intramuscular injection. Enrofloxacin (Sangon Biotech, China) was administered for piglets in Group 4 and 5. Group 4 was gavaged with a therapeutic dosage of enrofloxacin at 10 mg/kg of body weight once per day for 7 days. Group 5 was gavaged with sub-therapeutic dosage of enrofloxacin at 1 mg/kg of body weight once per day for 7 days.

Faeces (5 g) collected from each piglet. 50 E.coli isolated were randomly selected at each time point.
