Avoparcin was banned as a feed additive in Taiwan in 2000. A nationwide surveillance was conducted to study the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) on chicken farms between 2000 and 2003. In a small survey of farms and feed mills in Taiwan, 63% of broiler chicken feed mills used avoparcin the year before it was banned. The present report describes the findings of surveys conducted from 2000 to 2003 on the prevalence of AMR in E. faecalis and E. faecium from faecal specimens of broiler chickens on farms in Taiwan. The farms were surveyed between June and December in 2000 and between March and December in 2001, 2002 and 2003 from four counties located in the north, middle, south and southeastern regions of Taiwan. A total of 74 farms were surveyed for 2 or more years. Ten farms were surveyed for all 4 years.

1200 faecal samples were obtained from 300 farms located in different regions between 2000 and 2003. Each year, 20 broiler farms were surveyed per county and four fresh faecal droppings were collected per farm.
