a total of 450 samples were collected atretail outlets, including 220 from cottage processors and 230 fromsupermarkets.Thesamplingunitateachretailoutletwasfivechickens.Samples were collected once from each of the selected outlets andincluded three whole carcasses and two parts (whole carcass cut intosmaller pieces, approximately 40 pieces). Retail outlets(cottage poultry processors and supermarkets) were randomlyselected by using information provided by the Poultry SurveillanceUnit, Veterinary Public Health Unit in the Ministry of Health, andthe Association of Supermarket owners. Overall, a total of 44cottage processors and 46 supermarkets were sampled. The cottage processor outlets were selected on the basis of theproportional sampling from each of the seven counties in Trinidadby using stratified random sampling methods using a lotterymethod. For supermarket outlets, these were classified basedon the number of cashiers at each establishment, and the outletsfrom each class were selected by using proportional sampling forthe different classes and stratified random sampling method(21)within each class of supermarket. The supermarkets were classifiedas chain supermarkets (with more than one outlet), largesupermarkets (with four or more cash registers), mediumsupermarkets (with two to three cash registers), and smallsupermarkets (with only one cash register).
A modification of the previouslyreported swab-sampling method(23)and the rinse method(33, 37)were used to process the samples, and the isolation technique forSalmonellaspp., which was reported earlier was used
