300 fattening holdings, meeting the criteria of having ≥500 birds, were sampled no earlier than three weeks before slaughter. On each holding, only one flock was sampled. For breeding birds, all flocks on 29 holdings (116 flocks) were sampled within the last nine weeks before depopulation, representing all known breeding flocks in the UK that met the sampling criteria of ≥250 birds.

In both breeding and fattening flocks, samples consisted of faecal material collected by using five pairs of boot swabs taken from each sampled house. The sampling was carried out to ensure samples were representative of the whole house but excluded outdoor areas in freerange flocks. Each house was divided into five sectors and a new pair of boot swabs was used to walk for at least 100 steps representative of each sector.
