A cross-sectional study was carried out in which a convenience sample of 300 whole chicken carcasses (locally produced, not imported) was collected between July 2012and March 2013 from seven departments in Guatemala: Guate-mala, Alta Verapaz, Chimaltenango, Jutiapa, Escuintla, Huehue-tenango, and Quetzaltenango (Fig. 1). Departments were chosen toobtain a sample from different regions of the country, based ontheir documented human population(19). In each department, oneto three municipalities (equivalent to U.S. counties) that accountedfor 10% or more of the departmental population were selected toinclude in the sampling scheme.

Whole chicken carcass samples were collected from three different types of markets in the capital cities in each of the selected municipalities: supermarkets (chain stores offering avariety of food and household items,n=80), wet (municipal) markets (n=125), and independent poultry shops (n=95).
